Hydrotherapy: A Natural Way to Relieve Pain
Pain can be debilitating and can significantly reduce the quality of life of those who suffer from it. Hydrotherapy is a natural alternative that has many benefits for those suffering from both acute or chronic pain. Hydrotherapy encompasses any form of therapy that uses water for healing. This could include using hot and cold baths, pools, showers or steam rooms.
There are a number of benefits associated with hydrotherapy; including improved circulation, relaxation of muscles and reduced inflammation. It is also believed that hydrotherapy helps stimulate the release of endorphins in the body which can help to naturally reduce pain levels and may reduce the need for medication use.
Warm water therapy in the form of a bath or shower may cause your heart rate to increase, increasing blood flow to the affected areas and improving circulation by relaxing tense muscles. An osteopath may recommend warm water therapy for those who experience significant muscle tension and spasms including but not limited to those with acute low back pain, arthritis or fibromyalgia. Cold water therapy may provide relief for those who have persistent pain or inflammation by numbing sensitive nerve endings, reducing blood flow to the injured area and stimulating endorphin production.
Disclaimer: Always consult your osteopath or other healthcare provider before starting any sort of physical therapy regiment.
